Trump victorious in 2024 US Presidential race: State-by-state electoral analysis
Donald Trump has been declared the winner of the 2024 U.S. Presidential election, securing 312 electoral votes to defeat Kamala Harris who received 226 electoral votes.
Trump's victory was shaped by several key factors. Firstly, he reclaimed or retained important battleground states, such as Arizona with 11 electoral votes, which was carried by Republicans according to election coverage.
Secondly, the 2024 election saw a high level of voter engagement, with over 158 million Americans voting and a voter registration level of over 85%. Interestingly, mail-in voting decreased to 30.3% compared to 43% in 2020, reflecting a shift back toward in-person voting, a voting method where Trump performed well.
Thirdly, Trump's campaign benefited from a strong Republican party, with the party reclaiming control of the Senate and holding a narrow majority in the House, creating a political environment favourable to his campaign.
Fourthly, Trump's campaign faced adversity, including an attempted assassination in July 2024 during a rally in Pennsylvania. However, his campaign maintained momentum to election day.
Trump's victories were not limited to specific regions, as he won in the South, Midwest, and parts of the West. Some of his key victories include Florida (30), Ohio (17), Georgia (16), and North Carolina (16).
Kamala Harris saw a strong turnout among younger voters and urban populations during the election, but it was not enough to secure the presidency. Harris also won Nebraska (1 of 5 electoral votes) in the election.
After his victory, Trump gave a speech, claiming victory and thanking his supporters for a powerful mandate. He promised a "golden age" for America and expressed intentions to address border issues.
