Trump urges Senator Chuck Grassley to take action and eliminate the unnecessary tradition delaying judicial nominations
In a recent post on Truth Social, former President Trump called for an end to the "blue slip" tradition, citing it as a hindrance to appointing qualified judges and U.S. Attorneys in certain states. Trump's appeal comes amidst Alina Habba serving as the acting New Jersey US attorney, a position she hasn't been officially confirmed for.
The "blue slip" tradition, which allows senators to block judicial nominees for courts in their states, has been a subject of debate. Trump argues that the tradition allows Democratic senators from blue states to block Republican candidates, a practice he deems unfair.
Trump's post follows Senator Cory Booker and Andy Kim's decision to withhold their "blue slips" to block the Senate Judiciary Committee from considering Alina Habba, Trump's onetime personal attorney, for the top prosecutor spot in New Jersey.
The inconsistent application of the "blue slip" tradition over the years has been a point of contention for Trump. He argues that while Senator Chuck Grassley last significantly altered the tradition while serving as Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee under President Trump, under President Biden, the Senate Judiciary Committee, influenced by Grassley, has exhibited a stricter enforcement of blue slips, particularly impacting judicial nominees from Republican senators.
Trump further claims that under former President Joe Biden, the Senate Judiciary Committee openly broke the "blue slip" tradition at least two times. He urges Grassley to take immediate action to end the tradition, arguing that it is time for the Republicans to break the "blue slip" tradition, as the Democrats have done so.
However, a spokesperson for Senator Grassley did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Post.
President Trump's call to action comes as he argues that he would be unable to appoint "Great Judges or U.S. Attorneys" in states with high levels of crime and corruption, such as California, New York, New Jersey, Illinois, Virginia, and others, due to the "blue slip" tradition. Trump maintains that the only way to beat the "Hoax" is to appoint a Democrat or a weak and ineffective Republican, a stance that has been met with controversy and debate.
