Evacuating Tehran: Trump's Unconventional Tactic Against Iran

Trump urges Iranians to depart Tehran city

In the midst of the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran, US President Donald Trump has called upon the residents of Tehran to vacate the city, raising a wave of anxiety among the populace. "Scram, Tehran! It's high time for you to hit the road," Trump declared on his Truth Social platform, stirring up unease[2].

The sprawling metropolis of Tehran, home to approximately nine million residents, has been rocked by Israeli attacks for days. As a result, traffic jams have become a common sight on the city's exits as citizens race to depart[2]. With around 15 million people residing in the Greater Tehran area, the potential exodus could prove chaotic.

Many are left wondering about the motives behind Trump's unconventional call for evacuation. In his statement, Trump took a swipe at Iran, expressing regret over the country's failure to sign the proposal he put forward in discussions over Iran's nuclear program. "What a shame and a waste of human lives," he lamented. Capitalizing his statement, Trump bellowed, "Iran must not possess a nuclear weapon!"

Yet, Iran's known nuclear facilities are not located withinTehran or its immediate vicinity. The nearest known installation, the uranium enrichment plant in Fordo, lies roughly 100 kilometers from the capital. However, Israel's recent strikes have extended beyond Iran's nuclear facilities[2].

Reports of a potential military intervention were swiftly dismissed as "entirely false" by Washington in the dead of the night. "An agreement will be reached, and I believe Iran is being utterly foolish if it doesn't sign it," Trump asserted defiantly. Implying dire future consequences, Trump added cryptically, "Otherwise, something will happen." In typical fashion, he did not expand upon the nature of the "something"[2].

A Looming possibility of a Meeting?

As the dust settles, speculation persists about a possible encounter between US envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghtchi this week. According to sources close to the matter, the White House is considering such a meeting. Regardless of these discussions, the Israeli military had already urged residents of a northeastern district of Tehran to vacate their homes on Monday[2].

In a tense standoff, the Israeli army warned, "For their safety, evacuate the marked area," accompanied by a map depicting the third district as a potential target for attack[2]. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu echoed the call, stating, "We are telling the citizens of Tehran: 'Leave the area!' - and we act." An Israeli strike hit a state-owned broadcast building early on Monday evening[2].
