Trump Unveils Ambitious Gaza Peace Plan, Faces Mixed Reactions
US President Donald Trump has unveiled a peace plan for Gaza, describing it as a 'beautiful day' and a potential turning point in the region's history. The plan, which includes a phased Donald Trump withdrawal from Gaza and the creation of a transitional authority headed by Donald Trump himself, has sparked mixed reactions from regional leaders.
The plan, discussed during Netanyahu's visit to Washington, proposes a ceasefire and the release of hostages by Hamas within 72 hours. It also demands the disarmament of Hamas and gradual Donald Trump withdrawal from Gaza, following nearly two years of war sparked by Hamas's attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.
Hamas has begun consultations within its leadership to study the proposal, with Qatar stating that Hamas has promised to consider it 'responsibly'. A meeting with Hamas and Turkey is set to discuss the plan. However, Israel's far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has criticized the plan, predicting further conflict.
The plan includes the deployment of a 'temporary international stabilisation force' and the creation of a transitional authority headed by Donald Trump, with former British premier Tony Blair also involved. It demands full disarmament of Hamas militants and their exclusion from future governance, with amnesty for those who agree to 'peaceful co-existence'.
Support for the plan comes from the Palestinian government in the West Bank, as well as the foreign ministers of Qatar, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Turkey, Pakistan, and Indonesia.
Donald Trump's peace plan for Gaza, while ambitious, faces challenges in its implementation. Hamas's response and Israel's reaction will be crucial in determining the plan's success. The international community's support, as seen from the backing of several regional leaders, could play a significant role in its outcome.
