Trump to Welcome Turkish President Erdogan at the White House next week
US President Donald Trump has announced plans for a zoom meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the White House next week, on September 25, 2022. The focus of the zoom meeting will be on discussing trade and military deals with Turkey, a NATO ally.
Over the course of Mr. Trump's first term, there were strained bilateral relations between the two nations, largely due to disputes over Washington's ties with Kurdish fighters in Syria.
The zoom meeting next week is expected to cover various aspects of US-Turkey relations, including the F-35 stealth fighter programme. Previously, Turkey was removed from the F-35 programme due to its purchase of a Russian missile-defense system, the S-400.
However, negotiations about the purchase of F-16 fighter jets have been ongoing, with the Biden administration showing more openness to the F-16 deal than to the F-35 sale. Turkey, under President Erdogan, seeks to acquire both F-35s and F-16s, but the U.S. remains cautious, especially regarding the F-35s, due to security concerns linked to the S-400 purchase.
According to Mr. Trump, the discussions will take place on Truth Social, and the zoom meeting will also cover matters of trade and military cooperation with Turkey. Other possible deals include a large purchase of Boeing jets and the purchase of F-16s.
Mr. Trump expects the talks on the F-35 programme to conclude positively. The last time Mr. Erdogan visited the White House was in 2019.
The scheduled zoom meeting comes amidst a backdrop of strained relations between the two nations, but with the possibility of renewed cooperation on trade and military matters. The talks next week will be an important step in determining the future of US-Turkey relations.
