Trump to engage in discussions with Zelenskyy and EU leaders prior to his meeting with Putin
U.S. President Donald Trump to Hold Virtual Meeting with European Leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy
U.S. President Donald Trump will participate in a virtual meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other European leaders on Wednesday. The meeting, which was requested by Russian President Vladimir Putin, will focus primarily on discussions about the ongoing war in Ukraine and efforts to seek a resolution to the conflict.
The meeting follows President Trump's recent high-stakes summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, which ended without any ceasefire agreement. The Alaska summit, which took place on October 16th, addressed war causes and cooperation but did not yield a concrete ceasefire or peace deal.
The forthcoming talks will also aim to advance peace efforts, but the path to resolution remains uncertain. The summit will involve the heads of state and government of Germany, Finland, France, Italy, Poland, the U.K., and Ukraine. The president of the European Commission, head of the European Council, NATO secretary general, and U.S. vice president are expected to join the talks.
The White House described the upcoming meeting between Trump and Putin, scheduled for Friday in Anchorage, Alaska's largest city, as a "listening exercise" for the American leader. The summit will focus on "further options to exert pressure on Russia" and "preparations for possible peace negotiations and related questions regarding territorial claims and security guarantees."
The meeting will be the first formal meeting between Trump and Putin during Trump's second term as U.S. President. It will also mark the first face-to-face meeting between sitting Russian and U.S. presidents since June 2021. Moreover, this will be the first time a Russian president sets foot on Alaskan soil in over 150 years, a significant historical milestone.
However, it's important to note that only President Zelenskyy will not be in attendance during the meeting. The virtual meeting will occur two days before Trump meets with Putin in Alaska. The goal of the summit is for President Trump to gain a better understanding of how to end the war.
The meeting was invited by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and it will feature multiple discussion formats. Stefan Kornelius, a German government spokesperson, provided information about the meeting. This situation remains complex with ongoing negotiations and no immediate resolution in sight.
