Trump Ponders Name Change for the Persian Gulf During Middle East Trip
Trump to Declare Name of 'Persian Gulf' During Middle East Visit
Donald Trump, former US President, has hinted at a potentially divisive decision regarding the name of the Persian Gulf during his forthcoming visit to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates.
In a recent White House press conference, Trump talked about the possibility of changing the name of the waterway, expressing his concern for potentially offended feelings. He mentioned, "I'll have a briefing on that and I'll make a decision."
Several US media outlets have reported that Trump plans to unveil this change during his May 13-16 trip, with the new name being either the Arabian Gulf or the Gulf of Arabia.
Tensions between Arab nations and Iran over the waterway's name have been simmering for years. Iran has maintained that the Persian Gulf is the rightful designation due to historical evidence dating back to ancient maps, depicting it as part of their territories. On the other hand, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Iraq, and other Arab states have typically referred to the waterway as either the Arabian Gulf or simply "The Gulf."
In the past, Iran has threatened legal action against internet giants for not mentioning the name on online maps. The reaction to this potential name change from Iran's Foreign Minister, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, has been firm, with Araghchi condemning the suggested name change as indicative of "hostile intent" towards Iran and its people.
This is not the first time Trump has made a controversial move regarding geographic names. In one of his earliest actions as president, he signed an executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America."
