In the lead-up to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit scheduled for October 31, the United States and China have been engaged in constructive and positive trade talks. The discussions, which took place in Madrid, Spain, saw both parties addressing several key issues.

During the talks, Chinese President Xi Jinping criticised trade restrictions, urging the US to avoid unilateral trade restrictions to preserve the outcomes of their consultations. This stance was echoed by US President Donald Trump, who also expressed criticism towards trade restrictions during a recent phone call with Xi.

The US government has announced a potential framework for a TikTok deal with China, and the two leaders are expected to seal the agreement during their meeting on Friday. The social media app, which is owned by a Chinese company, has been the subject of much controversy in the US due to concerns over data security and privacy.

The Asia-Pacific Economic Community (Apec) comprises 21 states, including the United States, China, Russia, Canada, Mexico, South Korea, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand. The countries represented at the upcoming APEC summit in October 2025 also include Brunei, Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Timor-Leste, Thailand, Vietnam, India, Bhutan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives.

In a recent post, Trump mentioned progress on several issues, including trade, fentanyl, ending the war between Russia and Ukraine, and the approval of a TikTok deal. The APEC summit provides an opportunity for heads of state and government to discuss economic challenges and cooperation, and it is expected that the upcoming meeting will be no different.

The leaders of the 21 Apec member states will gather to address the economic challenges faced by the region and to strengthen cooperation in the coming months. With the positive momentum from the recent trade talks between the United States and China, the APEC summit promises to be a significant event in the global economic landscape.
