For months, Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett faced fierce criticism from right-wing circles over her decisions in cases tied to President Donald Trump's presidency. Even Donald Trump himself wasn't immune to her rulings on occasion. However, Friday's blockbuster opinion in the birthright citizenship case changed all of that.

Suddenly, the criticism from the right vanished like a mirage in the desert. Justice Barrett, who Trump nominated to the high court in September 2020, delivered the president a clear and dramatic win, limiting lower court judges' abilities to block his agenda. And the very man who was once critical of her decisions, showed his gratitude.

Trump, who hadn't held back his complaints about Barrett in private, praised her during a celebratory news conference at the White House. "I want to thank Justice Barrett, who authored the opinion brilliantly, as well as Chief Justice Roberts and Justices Alito, Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, and Thomas - great people," he said.

According to many court watchers, it was surprising that Barrett, the second-most junior member of the court, was assigned the major opinion. Most assumed Chief Justice John Roberts or someone else would write it instead.

This major win for the president marked the second time in as many years the Supreme Court ended a term with a blockbuster ruling in his favor. Last year, the court ruled that Trump was entitled to immunity from criminal prosecution on federal election interference charges.

While this ruling didn't necessarily mean that Trump will be able to enforce the birthright citizenship order, it does make it harder for groups challenging future Trump policies to get those measures paused on a temporary basis. As Barrett stated in her opinion, "under our well-established precedent, the equitable relief available in the federal courts is that 'traditionally accorded by courts of equity' at the time of our founding. Nothing like a universal injunction was available at the founding, or for that matter, for more than a century thereafter."

Justice Coney Barrett's controversial Supreme Court decisions often align with President Trump's agenda, particularly concerning restricting judicial oversight on executive actions and maintaining conservative views on constitutional interpretation. Her rulings have allowed Trump’s policies to move forward amid legal uncertainty, while also occasionally upholding administrative programs despite conservative critiques. Barrett’s judicial style is marked by firm conservative loyalty and a willingness to sharply rebut liberal justices’ dissents, underscoring a broader ideological divide on the Court.

Trump's praise for Justice Coney Barrett was a noticeable shift from his earlier criticism, as he acknowledged her role in the birthright citizenship case at a White House news conference. Barrett's opinion in this case marked a significant win for Trump, as it set a precedent limiting lower court judges' abilities to halt his agenda in policy-and-legislation matters, especially those related to politics. This decision, in line with her previous rulings, accentuated her alignment with the president's agenda, demonstrating her firm conservative stance in politics.
