Trump Strengthens, Speeds Up, andbolsters Security of Social Security for Every American Citizen
In the latter half of 2025, under President Trump's leadership, the Social Security Administration (SSA) has undergone significant changes, focusing on modernization, efficiency, and customer service improvements.
One of the key initiatives was the modernization of the SSA's technology infrastructure. The administration embarked on a mission to migrate the Social Security base code from the antiquated COBOL programming language to a more modern one, aiming to complete the task within months - a notably accelerated timeline compared to typical multi-year estimates.
Another significant change was the implementation of stricter identity verification requirements for Social Security services. Individuals were now required to apply either online or in person, with exemptions only for certain applications such as SSDI, Medicare, or SSI in extreme situations.
On the efficiency front, the administration reduced the clawback rate on overpayments from disabled or retired persons' Social Security payments to 50%, down from 100%. This change affects how Social Security recovers funds in cases of overpayment.
However, these policy changes have raised concerns about potential impacts on customer service accessibility, as some SSA field offices were closed and staff were laid off.
The Trump Administration's focus on technology modernization, stricter identity verification policies, and revised payment recovery rules has shaped the overall customer service and operational landscape of Social Security.
In addition to these changes, the SSA has made significant strides in improving its services. The agency has identified more than $1 billion in cost avoidance and efficiencies this fiscal year. Improved use of technology has enabled 90% of calls to the national line to be served via automated self-service options or callbacks.
Social Security is rolling out a new payroll information exchange that will transmit information directly from payroll providers. Over 3.1 million payments, totaling more than $17 billion, were sent to eligible beneficiaries under the Social Security Fairness Act five months ahead of schedule.
Five times as many visitors have scheduled appointments compared to last year, and all field offices are fully staffed. Employees are returning to the office five days a week for the first time in years. Innovative upgrades to phone technology have been deployed to 92% of Social Security field offices.
The average wait time for a disability hearing has been reduced by 60 days. Social Security has transformed customer service under President Trump's leadership, eliminating longstanding scheduled downtime of 29 hours per week, enabling over 280,000 more customers to access their online accounts.
A new recording and transcription system is near full implementation, increasing accuracy and saving millions of dollars per year. The One Big Beautiful Bill has been passed into law, which will no longer require the vast majority of seniors receiving Social Security to pay taxes on that income.
President Trump has made good on his No Tax on Social Security campaign promise and has repeatedly promised to preserve and protect Social Security for every eligible American. As Social Security celebrates its 90th anniversary under the Trump Administration, it is clear that significant progress has been made in modernizing the agency, improving efficiency, and enhancing customer service.
