In the midst of a growing crisis, President Donald Trump's Middle East Special Representative, Steve Witkoff, recently visited Gaza to discuss the urgent humanitarian needs in the territory.

Witkoff's meetings, which took place at the U.S.-Israeli coordinated Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) distribution center in Rafah city, focused primarily on food aid for Gaza. The visit, which lasted five hours, aimed to address the ongoing food crisis that has been a subject of concern for international humanitarian organizations.

The $30 million food aid effort, part of a U.S.- and Israeli-backed initiative, follows a $30 million grant approved by the U.S. State Department in late June 2025. This grant funds food and supplies delivery to Gaza, with private U.S. security and logistics companies ensuring distribution at "secure distribution sites" in Gaza.

However, the aid effort has been met with criticism due to the limited number of distribution sites and the high number of Palestinian casualties during food delivery. Reports indicate over 1,300 Palestinians killed while seeking food since May 2025. The GHF has also faced scrutiny concerning its financial transparency, having been exempted from typical auditing procedures for new USAID grantees.

Despite these challenges, Witkoff's visit to Gaza was praised by President Trump as highly successful. Photos from Witkoff's visit showed fewer people waiting for aid at the Rafah distribution point, indicating a positive impact on the ground.

Trump has acknowledged the severity of Gaza's hunger crisis, admitting to real starvation occurring in the territory. He plans to provide more information about the food aid for Gaza later.

The timing of Witkoff's high-level visit drew attention to the situation at the Rafah distribution point, coming as international humanitarian organizations continue to raise concerns about food security in Gaza. Witkoff was scheduled to proceed to another distribution center in Khan Younis, demonstrating a commitment to addressing the needs of the people in Gaza.

As the situation in Gaza continues to evolve, the U.S., under Steve Witkoff's leadership, is working to facilitate aid distribution amidst a challenging and violent environment, with a focus on safety, transparency, and effectiveness.
