Trump stated there was no significant advancement during his discussion with Putin regarding Ukraine issues.
In a recent development, the United States has temporarily halted shipments of some critical weapons supplies to Ukraine, including air defense interceptors, artillery shells, missiles, and rockets, as of early July 2025. The suspension was initiated due to concerns about diminishing U.S. weapons stockpiles and a strategic review to prioritise America's own military interests globally.
The pause in U.S. military aid affects Ukraine's defense against enhanced Russian long-range missile and drone attacks, likely forcing Ukrainian forces to ration their materiel. This suspension may accelerate Russian battlefield gains and reinforce Russian President Putin's strategy that relies on a war of attrition, banking on outlasting Western support for Ukraine.
The Pentagon has halted shipments of some air defense missiles and other precision weapons but did not publicly comment on the details. However, former U.S. President Donald Trump indicated some sympathy to Ukraine’s plea for more Patriot air defense systems, suggesting some potential future support remains possible, though these systems are "very hard to get."
Meanwhile, European countries have significantly increased their military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine, largely offsetting the reduction of U.S. support financially and materially. Europe's aid allocation in early 2025 reached record levels, suggesting a shift towards Europe taking a larger role in sustaining Ukraine's defense.
Kathryn Watson, a politics reporter for our News Digital, based in Washington, D.C., reported that President Trump spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday morning, and they discussed opportunities in air defense and agreed to strengthen protection of Ukrainian skies. The conversation between Trump and Putin occurred on Thursday, and the call lasted nearly an hour. President Trump has expressed frustration with both Putin and Zelenskyy, as Russia's war on Ukraine continues.
Russia has continued to launch assaults on Ukraine, stymying Mr. Trump's aspirations of a ceasefire. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated they are paying close attention to all of President Trump's statements regarding the war with Ukraine. President Trump is disappointed with his conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
