Trump sets up multiple encounters with Chinese president Xi - Trump sets multiple encounters with China's President Xi on the calendar
US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping will meet this fall at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in South Korea. The two-day summit begins on October 31 and includes 21 member economies, including the US, China, Russia, Canada, Mexico, South Korea, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand.
The conversation between the two leaders was reportedly "positive" and "constructive". Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform that there has been progress in many important issues, including trade, fentanyl, ending the war between Russia and Ukraine, and approving a TikTok deal. However, China's statements on a potential TikTok deal remain vague.
China hopes that the US will provide an open and non-discriminatory business environment for Chinese companies investing there. China respects the wishes of companies and welcomes it when they negotiate and find solutions in accordance with market rules and China's laws, according to Xinhua. No explicit mention was made about a deal regarding the Chinese social media platform TikTok in the conversation between Trump and Xi.
Xi Jinping criticized unilateral trade restrictions during his conversation with Donald Trump. The US government said there was a framework for a TikTok deal with China, where the current owner Bytedance is based, a few days ago. Trump and Xi are expected to finalize the TikTok agreement in a conversation on Friday, according to US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
In the past, Trump and Xi have met several times during Trump's first term, including a meeting in 2019 in Osaka, Japan, and a visit by Xi to Mar-a-Lago in Florida in 2017. The US should avoid unilateral trade restrictions to not undermine the results achieved in the consultations between both sides, according to Xi.
No further details were provided about the US visit by Xi Jinping. The fourth round of negotiations between China and the US took place this week in Madrid, Spain. It is expected that Trump might announce a deal regarding the Chinese social media platform TikTok, which must sell its US business, during the APEC summit.
