In a significant development, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and U.S. President Donald Trump are set to meet on August 15 in Alaska. This will be the first face-to-face meeting between the two leaders since June 2019.

The summit, taking place "far from this war," comes amidst ongoing conflict in Ukraine, particularly in the eastern and southern oblasts. The Russian government has demanded significant territorial concessions from Ukraine, including the withdrawal from the entire territories of the Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhia, and Kherson oblasts. Russia also insists on Ukraine's demilitarization, "denazification" of its government, and future neutrality, likely implying no NATO membership.

Ukrainian leadership, including President Zelenskyy, has strongly rejected any territorial concessions. Zelensky has assured that Ukrainians will not yield their lands to the occupier nor reward Russia for what it has perpetrated. He has also stated that any decision without Ukraine is a decision against peace.

Meanwhile, the Russian offensive in Ukraine has caused tens of thousands of deaths and massive destruction. In response, Ukraine announced that it would carry out new forced evacuations of civilians in the east of its territory.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Putin presented a ceasefire proposal to the Trump administration, demanding significant territorial concessions by Kiev. However, the U.S. has not confirmed or denied whether new sanctions will be imposed on Russia.

The last round of direct negotiations in Istanbul only resulted in an exchange of prisoners and soldiers' remains. The recent meeting between U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff and Putin in the Kremlin, however, has sped up efforts and led to a "principle agreement" for a future summit between the U.S. and Russian presidents.

Despite international pushback, Russia's position remains firm on these demands. Russian officials have indicated they will not consider any territorial concessions themselves but require Ukraine to give up these lands as a condition for peace talks.

As the conflict continues, Zelensky has denounced that despite the deadline for Russia to cease fire, the attacks continue. More than a hundred attack drones were launched against Ukraine, followed by aerial bombings and heavy fighting on the front.

The meeting between Trump and Putin is hoped to discuss a resolution for the war in Ukraine. With both leaders emphasizing the importance of international cooperation to pressure Russia, there is a glimmer of hope for a peaceful resolution to this long-standing conflict.

The meeting between Trump and Putin serves as a platform for discussing potential resolutions to the ongoing war-and-conflicts in Ukraine, particularly in the eastern and southern oblasts, which have been marred by significant destruction and thousands of casualties. Despite international pressure, Russia's stance on territorial concessions remains firm, with Zelensky vehemently rejecting any yielding of Ukrainian lands.
