Trump Set for Putin Summit in Bid to Terminate Ukraine Conflict

President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin met in Alaska on August 15, 2025, in a highly anticipated summit aimed at discussing the ongoing conflict between the U.S. and Ukraine. The meeting took place at the Elmendorf Richardson military base in Anchorage.

The meeting, which lasted close to three hours, was Trump's first face-to-face encounter with Putin since the start of his second term. Trump had only spoken with Putin via phone during his first six months in office.

During the meeting, Trump expressed his belief that there was a chance to end the ongoing conflict. However, he did not view the meeting as Putin's last chance to end the war. Similarly, Putin did not express any sense of urgency regarding the conflict's resolution.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had emphasized the need for a real, living peace that people will respect. He also stated that decisions against Ukraine are also decisions against peace, and any decisions without Ukraine are dead solutions that will never work.

The ongoing conflict between the U.S. and Ukraine, and Russia, has been ongoing for approximately 35 years. According to reports, roughly one-and-a-half million casualties have been reported from both sides in the three-and-a-half years of the conflict, according to the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

Trump referred to the prime ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan as two very smart people who have been going at it for 35 years. He also stated that it is tough to get the guns to stop once they start firing in the ongoing conflict.

Despite the lengthy discussion, no concrete peace deal was reached during the meeting. Both leaders described the meeting as having positive elements, although Trump admitted they had not yet "gotten there" on the major issue of peace in Ukraine. The talks concluded without halting Russia's assault on Ukraine, indicating ongoing tensions remained unresolved.

In conclusion, the meeting was held in Alaska in mid-August 2025, and while both presidents engaged in dialogue, no concrete peace deal was made at that time. The ongoing conflict between the U.S. and Ukraine, and Russia, continues to pose a significant challenge to global peace and security.

The ongoing conflict between the U.S., Ukraine, and Russia became a key topic in the political and general news spheres, as Trump and Putin discussed potential ends to the long-standing war during their meeting in Alaska. Despite the optimistic tone from both leaders, the talks did not result in a concrete peace deal, highlighting the challenges in achieving a living peace that people will respect, as emphasized by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
