Trump set for Alaskan summit with Putin, discussing Ukraine's peace agreement on the agenda

In a significant diplomatic move, US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are set to meet in Alaska on August 15, aiming to negotiate an end to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. This high-stakes summit marks the first such gathering in Alaska since March 2021.

The current status of the proposed ceasefire deal involving Russia, Ukraine, and the US is uncertain, with no agreement reached as yet. Prospects for a successful ceasefire remain bleak, as Russia has presented Ukraine with conditional ceasefire offers requiring Ukraine's withdrawal from several occupied regions and recognition of Russian annexations, which Kyiv has rejected.

Russia has proposed that Ukraine withdraws forces from regions such as Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson, which were annexed by Russia but not fully controlled, or Ukraine halts mobilization, freezes Western arms deliveries, bans third-country troops, ends martial law, and holds elections, after which a comprehensive peace treaty could be negotiated. However, Ukraine and its allies strongly reject Russia's demands to recognize its annexations legally, declare neutrality between Russia and the West, abandon NATO ambitions, limit its armed forces, recognize Russian as an official language, and ban nationalist groups Moscow labels as neo-Nazi.

Since his return to the White House in January, Trump has been seeking to mend relations with Russia and end the war in Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has held more than a dozen conversations with leaders of different countries and his team is in constant contact with the United States. Zelenskiy has stated that it is possible to achieve a ceasefire as long as adequate pressure is applied to Russia.

The Ukrainian government may find it politically challenging to accept the loss of around a fifth of Ukraine's territory in any potential peace agreement. The peace proposal, as outlined in a report, would be immediately rejected by the Ukrainians, according to Tyson Barker, the US State Department's former deputy special representative for Ukraine's economic recovery.

The Kremlin has confirmed the summit, stating that the leaders will discuss options for a long-term peaceful resolution to the Ukrainian crisis. However, the US-Russia summit scheduled for August 2025 lacks Ukraine’s participation, raising questions about the viability of any deal and diplomatic approach. Analysts expect Putin to use ongoing military pressure and economic tactics to isolate Ukraine and Europe, while positioning Kyiv as the obstacle to peace to the US, aiming to shift blame in peace negotiations.

Experts conclude that the likely scenario is the failure of these peace efforts, with the conflict continuing intermittently without a decisive ceasefire or political resolution in the near term. Despite the challenges, Yuri Ushakov, a Putin aide, stated that the process will be challenging but will be engaged in actively and energetically.
