Trump Taps Mike Waltz for UN Ambassador Role

Hey there! The tweet of the day comes from the White House, as President Donald Trump announces his pick for the next U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.

Guess who's got the gig? None other than our National Security Advisor, Mike Waltz! Trump's tweet read, "Delighted to announce my nomination of Mike Waltz as the next United States Ambassador to the United Nations. His military service, congressional tenure, and time spent as my National Security Advisor have all shown his dedication to our nation."

While Secretary of State Marco Rubio will be filling in as the new National Security Advisor in the interim, both Waltz and his deputy, Alex Wong, are expected to vacate their positions at the White House, starting today, according to media reports.

Just a heads up, Waltz's nomination requires a thumbs up from the Senate for him to officially take up the role at the UN.

It's worth mentioning that the secretary of state can also double up as the national security advisor. Remember Henry Kissinger? He held both positions from 1973 to 1975.

Trump withdrew Republican Elise Stefanik's nomination as U.S. Ambassador to the UN on March 27, 2025. Former Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield stepped down from her role on January 20, when Trump took office as U.S. President.

In March, Waltz faced backlash for a secret group chat he set up with journalist Jeffrey Goldberg, discussing a military operation against Yemen's Houthi militants. But that's water under the bridge now, as he's gearing up for a new challenge at the UN. Stay tuned for updates!
