Trump seeks covert measures in his negotiations with Russia, according to Fischer.

The ongoing Ukraine war has led to a significant deterioration in US-Russia relations, with both nations intensifying their military and political maneuvers.

In recent developments, Russia's oil and gas revenue has reportedly dropped by nearly 30% compared to the previous year, marking the third consecutive month of decline [1]. This economic strain could potentially impact Russia's war efforts, but the country is still reportedly considering suspending its long-range attacks in Ukraine as a possible concession to US President Trump, while continuing the war [2].

The US, on the other hand, has been providing extensive military and economic support to Ukraine. Over the past few months, the US and its NATO allies have supplied billions of dollars in military and economic aid to Ukraine, aiming to bolster its defense against the Russian invasion [3]. This includes support for Ukraine's military capabilities and civil society, as well as imposing significant economic sanctions on Russia to degrade its warfighting capacity [2][3].

The European Union recently approved over 3.2 billion euros in additional aid to Ukraine [3]. Moreover, European NATO partners have pledged more than one billion dollars in two days for the purchase of US-made weapons for Ukraine [4]. The USA has also approved foreign military sales to Ukraine worth over $200 million for artillery support, transport, and logistics [5].

Russia, in turn, has demanded that Ukraine cede control of key territories such as Donetsk, Luhansk, and Crimea as conditions for ceasefire negotiations [3]. Kremlin officials also seek to freeze the frontline in other contested regions, with indications that Russia intends to maintain or expand its territorial control rather than withdraw [3]. The ongoing conflict sees Russian forces violating ceasefires and continuing military offensives despite diplomacy attempts [3].

The overarching US policy holds that Russia remains a long-term strategic adversary threatening US national security and the international order. Current US strategy emphasizes confronting Russian aggression with strength, rejecting appeasement, to ensure lasting peace and deter further Russian expansionism [1]. There has been some political debate about the sustainability of US and Western support amidst shifting priorities and populist trends, but aid continues [2].

The conflict has also seen Russia reinforcing its air defense around Moscow and rebuilding its Cold War-era air defense rings in response to frequent Ukrainian drone attacks [6]. Russia is reportedly able to send additional soldiers to Ukraine each month, according to Ukrainian sources [7].

In a significant move, US special envoy Steve Witkoff has arrived in Moscow for talks with Russian state leadership [8]. The Trump administration is considering new sanctions against Russia's "ghost fleet" of oil tankers if a ceasefire is not achieved by August 8th [9].

Meanwhile, Ukraine's commander-in-chief Oleksiy Syrskyj described the situation in the Donetsk region as "especially critical" [10]. The Ukrainian design bureau "Technari" has presented its own anti-Shahed drone interceptor - Mangust (Mongoose) [11].

The war in Ukraine has led to a deepened adversarial US-Russia relationship unlikely to normalize soon, with potential for broader conflict if diplomatic and military tensions escalate [1][2].
