Trump revisits Gaza plan during his Middle East travels

AISHA CHANG, HOST:

In the midst of his Middle East tour, President Trump has taken an unexpected stance on the volatile Gaza conflict. During a business roundtable in Doha, he suggested that the U.S. should take over Gaza and transform it into a "freedom zone." This proposal comes as Israel intensifies its military campaign in Gaza, causing over 150 deaths in the past day alone.

PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: Gaza has been a hotbed of destruction for years. With ideas I have for Gaza, it could become a freedom zone. Let the United States step in and make it so.

AISHA CHANG: NPR's Franco Ordoñez, traveling with the president, joins us from Abu Dhabi, UAE. Hi, Franco.

FRANCO ORDOÑEZ, BYLINE: Hey, Aisha.

AISHA CHANG: The unrest in Gaza is a major conflict in the Middle East. Why hasn't Trump been talking about it more while he's in the region?

FRANCO ORDOÑEZ: Well, he hasn't discussed it much during this trip, but today marks the first specific remarks about Gaza at a business forum in Doha. And on this issue, he wasn't holding back.

TRUMP: They'd be proud to have the United States take control, make it a freedom zone, let good things happen. People can live safely there while we deal with the obstacles, like Hamas.

AISHA CHANG: With little progress in ceasefire discussions and Israel preparing for another offensive after Trump's departure, let's talk about the leaders Trump has met. What have they been saying about the conflict?

FRANCO ORDOÑEZ: They've been quite reserved about this topic. In many ways, they want to steer clear of discussing it while Trump is there. They're putting on grand displays and announcing significant investments to boost their global stature, and they don't want any potential pressure from Trump on contentious issues like Gaza.

AISHA CHANG: Today, Trump visited Al Udeid Air Base outside Doha. How was that different from his other stops?

FRANCO ORDOÑEZ: Apart from the military helicopters and service members, it felt like a campaign rally. Trump delivered a partisan speech, using his "Make America Great Again" slogan and playing his campaign music. Presidents usually avoid political speeches, especially when abroad, so this was unusual.

AISHA CHANG: Finally, Trump also visited a mosque upon landing in the UAE. How significant is that?

FRANCO ORDOÑEZ: It's believed to be Trump's first visit to a mosque during his tenure. This act of respect to the hosts and their religion highlights the hospitality he's received. Additionally, it serves as a symbol of his efforts to improve relations with the Muslim community at home.

AISHA CHANG: Franco Ordoñez reporting from Abu Dhabi, UAE. Thank you, Franco.

FRANCO ORDOÑEZ: Thank you.

The proposal to take over Gaza and develop it as a "freedom zone" carries historical and political implications, impacting both regional dynamics and international relations. Gaza has been a conflict region for decades, and Trump's proposal represents a significant departure from the traditional approach to resolving the Israeli-Palestinian crisis. Trump's idea may escalate tensions, face international criticism, and complicate ongoing peace negotiations. Furthermore, the potential consequences include the displacement of nearly 2 million residents and human rights violations, given the scale of relocation proposed in past ideas. Ultimately, this U.S. proposal could reshape regional stability, international relations, and humanitarian conditions in the Middle East.
