Trump reveals extensive plans for a $200 million White House renovation
The White House is set for a major renovation, with plans to construct a new 90,000 square foot State Ballroom. The announcement, made on July 31, 2025, reveals that the project is privately funded by former President Donald Trump and other donors. Construction is scheduled to begin in September 2025, with the aim of completing the project before the end of Trump's presidential term in January 2029.
The need for this expansion arises from current limitations. Formal events at the White House are often held in the East Room, which only seats 200, or temporary tents on the grounds, which Trump has described as "not a pretty sight." The new ballroom, with a capacity of up to 650 people, will provide a larger, permanent, and elegant venue suitable for state dinners and receptions.
The design for the new ballroom, by McCrery Architects, is said to mimic the architectural style of the rest of the White House campus. It will feature elaborate gold details, as seen in the renderings of the design. The ballroom will be separated from the main building but will share a similar architectural heritage.
The site of the new ballroom will be where the current East Wing stands. The East Wing, historically reserved as office space for the first lady and staff, will be temporarily moved during the construction of the ballroom. The White House officials describe the Rose Garden's conversion as a 'restoration' with 'respect for the history of the White House and for the Rose Garden.' However, the infamous Rose Garden lawn, installed under President John F. Kennedy, has been converted into a concrete patio area, causing controversy.
Trump has expressed his confidence that the new ballroom will be beautiful, comparing it to his existing Trump Turnberry golf club’s ballroom. The new ballroom is expected to follow a similar opulent aesthetic aligned with Trump’s previous renovations and additions to historic properties.
