Trump repositions nuclear submarines near Russian borders
In a significant development, U.S. President Donald Trump has announced the tactical redeployment of two U.S. nuclear submarines, citing the need for increased security in the face of "highly provocative" statements made by former Russian president Dmitri Medvedev on social media.
Trump, who made the announcement on his Truth Social platform, stated that the submarines would be repositioned "to appropriate regions" as a precaution. However, it is unclear if the submarines have actually changed course or if any physical redeployment has occurred, as the Pentagon and White House have not confirmed operational movements.
The move comes after Medvedev made comments online that invoked fears related to Soviet-era nuclear strategies, which Trump described as inflammatory and potentially leading to unintended consequences. This public escalation between the two nuclear powers on social media is a rare occurrence.
Russian lawmaker Viktor Vodolatsky downplayed the significance of the U.S. repositioning statement, emphasizing Russia’s numerical advantage in nuclear submarines and suggesting the move was largely symbolic. Russian officials have responded by stating that Russia possesses enough nuclear submarines to counter any U.S. move and indicated no immediate response to the announcement was necessary.
The exact location of the submarines was not initially specified by Trump. Meanwhile, the US Navy operates both nuclear-powered submarines with and without nuclear weapons on board.
Elsewhere, at least eleven people, including a five-month-old infant and two children aged nine and ten, were injured in a heavy Russian drone strike on the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv. Two men were reportedly killed in a drone strike in the Russian region of Belgorod, bordering Ukraine. The damage and loss of life on the Russian side due to the ongoing Russian invasion is insignificant compared to the devastation and loss of life in Ukraine.
Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, is currently in the Middle East, assessing the situation in the Gaza Strip. The public dispute between Trump and Medvedev has been ongoing for several days. Medvedev, on his X platform, has threatened a direct military confrontation between Russia and the U.S., while Trump has reduced his ultimatum to Russian President Vladimir Putin from 50 to 10 days, demanding a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine within that time.
