In a controversial move, former President Trump ousted Doug Emhoff, husband of Vice President Kamala Harris, from the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum Board. This action forms part of a broader pattern by the Trump administration, where appointees from previous administrations, including senior Biden aides, were replaced.

Emhoff, being Jewish, was appointed to the museum's board by Trump's predecessor, Joe Biden. Normally, 55 out of the 63 board members are appointed by the president.

Trump's decision, as reported by the "New York Times," also extended to other board members appointed by his predecessor, including Biden's former chief of staff, Ron Klain, and former national security advisor to President Barack Obama, Susan Rice.

While the Holocaust Museum dismissals were met with sharp criticism from Democrats, Emhoff himself condemned the decision, stating it "dishonors the memory" of Holocaust victims. Jewish Democratic leaders shared similar sentiments, describing the action as "unprecedented and reprehensible."

Critics argued that the administration was using these dismissals as a political wedge, painting it as an erosion of institutional norms. Susan Rice, Ron Klain, and other removed members had roles in Biden's antisemitism response efforts, suggesting Democrats view these dismissals as undermining bipartisan efforts in education and cultural preservation.

In addition to the Holocaust Museum, Trump had also removed several members of the board of the Kennedy Center and had appointed himself chairman, a highly unusual move. He announced plans to ban drag queen performances and other shake-ups, causing further backlash.
