Trump Prolongs TikTok Sale Deadline for Third Time, Signing Decree to Extend Temporarily

Trump reconsiders third potential TikTok sale

Take a peek LinkdIn Instagram E-Mail Print Copy Link US President Donald Trump has inked a decree to expand the timeline set by American authorities for the sale of video-sharing platform TikTok by its Chinese proprietors, ByteDance, for a third time on Thursday. Trump communicated on his Truth Social platform on Thursday, "I've just signed the order extending the deadline by 90 days (until September 17, 2025)."

Ever since Trump assumed office in January, a US legislation required ByteDance to sell TikTok or face prohibition. US authorities suspect the Chinese firm of employing TikTok to espionage on its users on behalf of Beijing. However, the deadline has been missed twice without a buyer being identified. Trump, initially, had stalled the app's ban from US digital storehouses for 75 days upon taking charge and then extended it by another 75 days in early April.

Trump’s representative, Karoline Leavitt, clarified that Trump "does not want TikTok to vanish." The aim of the sale is to ensure that "the American public can continue to enjoy TikTok, with the assurance that their data remains safe and secure," Leavitt stressed. The extended timeframe gives the US government an opportunity to " ensure that the sale is brought to completion." TikTok endorsed the extension on Thursday. "We're thankful for President Trump's guidance in ensuring TikTok stays accessible to more than 170 million American users," the company declared in a statement.

During his initial reign, which concluded in early 2021, Trump advocated for a prohibition or sale of TikTok. However, he now seems to view potential in the platform with millions of US users to woo young voters. Trump has vigorously focused on digital services in his 2024 campaign. The US president has repeatedly acclaimed the popular video app among young adults: "TikTok possesses a little, cozy corner in my heart," Trump shared with NBC News last month.
