Trump receives prestigious state treatment during his visit to the UK
Trump's Second State Visit to Britain: A Mix of Ceremony and Controversy
Donald Trump, the former US President, is currently in Britain for his second state visit. On Thursday, he was the only notable person received by Prime Minister Keir Starmer at Chequers, where they held political discussions.
The day before, Trump and his wife Melania were greeted at Windsor Castle by Prince William and Catherine. The couple embarked on a carriage procession through the Windsor estate, followed by 120 horses and 1,300 members of the British military.
King Charles III and Queen Camilla met with the Trumps at Windsor Castle. However, the spectre of late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein is causing domestic headaches for both Trump and Starmer and has caused the royal family considerable embarrassment.
In a separate incident, four people were arrested for projecting images of Trump and Epstein onto Windsor Castle.
The Trumps also laid a wreath on the tomb of Queen Elizabeth II. Thousands are expected to attend protests in London on Wednesday.
On the second day of the visit, Trump and Starmer will meet at Starmer's country residence, Chequers. The president and Charles will give speeches at a white-tie state banquet.
A joint fly-past by US and UK fighter jets is planned for the visit. To mark the occasion, a 41-gun salute was fired simultaneously at Windsor Castle's east lawn and the Tower of London.
The visit comes amidst political troubles for Starmer at home. He recently sacked his UK ambassador to Washington, Peter Mandelson, over a furore involving the diplomat's connection to the late Epstein.
Trump described Prince Charles as 'my friend.' The British pharmaceutical group GSK announced it will invest $30 billion in the United States over the next five years.
Trump owns two golf resorts in Scotland. The killing of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk has caused deep turmoil in the United States.
This makes Trump the first US president to receive two state visits. The visit, marked by a mix of ceremony and controversy, is expected to continue in the coming days.
