The Kremlin has confirmed a planned meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Donald Trump in Alaska on Friday. The upcoming high-level talks have been framed by Trump as a way to "feel out" the parameters for a potential ceasefire in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

The proposed land swap between Ukraine and Russia involves Ukraine making "painful but acceptable" territorial concessions in an effort to achieve a ceasefire and potentially end the war. This idea is connected to former U.S. President Donald Trump, who strongly supports a "land swapping" deal as the foundation of any peace agreement.

However, the outcome remains uncertain and highly sensitive given the complex geopolitical stakes and conflicting demands. While Ukraine may be willing to make territorial concessions, it is unclear if these will be sufficient for Russia, or politically acceptable for Ukraine and its allies. Failure to reach a concrete agreement could prolong the conflict.

Ukraine's national security advisors are set to consult with their counterparts from allied states later today regarding the ceasefire. Meanwhile, Romania, an important ally of Ukraine, is investigating whether Russia intentionally contaminated oil from Azerbaijan, which was intended for a refinery in southern Romania, with organic chloride. The contaminated oil has also been found in Italy and the Czech Republic, potentially causing a fuel crisis in Romania and damaging refinery equipment.

In a related development, Russia plans to conduct tests of the nuclear-powered cruise missile "Burevestnik" in the coming days on the Russian archipelago of Novaya Zemlya. This weapon, equipped with a nuclear propulsion system and a thermonuclear warhead, has been the subject of preparations for several weeks.

China will continue to purchase oil from Russia despite US President Donald Trump's tariff threats. Trump mentioned a "land swap" between Russia and Ukraine as a possible content of an agreement, but the exact method of disguising these territorial plans is still unclear.

President Volodymyr Zelensky sees at least the possibility of a ceasefire, but it depends on sufficient pressure on Russia. The Kremlin has invited Trump to visit Russia after the planned meeting in Alaska.
