Trump receives a regal reception from King Charles III during his second official visit to the United Kingdom, marking a significant historical event.
Trump's Second State Visit to the U.K. Marked by Grand Welcome
President Donald Trump is currently in London for his second state visit to the United Kingdom, making him the only world leader to ever receive this honor twice. The British Prime Minister with whom Trump will hold talks on Thursday is Keir Starmer.
Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were greeted by the largest military welcome for a state visit to the U.K., as they arrived at Windsor Castle late Tuesday. The couple traveled to the castle in a procession of horse-drawn carriages, where they were greeted by King Charles III.
Trump's fondness for Britain's royals is well-known, and this visit is no exception. The Trumps were treated to a private audience with Queen Camilla, followed by a "Beating Retreat" musical performance. They also visited St. George’s Chapel and participated in a wreath-laying at the Tomb of Queen Elizabeth II.
After a private lunch and a visit to an exhibit featuring ties between Britain and the U.S., a state banquet will take place. Up to 160 guests will gather around a long mahogany table for the state banquet, where the king and president will offer toasts. Tiaras and medals will be on display, adding to the grandeur of the event.
Prime Minister Starmer will tout a new U.K.-U.S. technology deal during the banquet. The British government hopes the deal and billions in investment from U.S. tech firms will show the trans-Atlantic bond remains strong. The events are being staged well outside London to make it easier to control protests.
Charles will deliver a speech at the state banquet, further highlighting the significance of the occasion. Trump described the invitation as "a great, great honor."
British police have undertaken a massive security operation for the visit, with the events being staged far from the city center to ensure public safety. Despite the security measures, protests are expected to take place throughout the visit.
The state visit comes at a time of increased tension between the two countries, with disputes over trade, security, and foreign policy. However, both sides are hopeful that the visit will help to strengthen the relationship between the U.K. and the U.S.
