Trump received a signal from Putin indicating that it's now appropriate to dismantle Zelensky - a repeat instance.

In a surprising turn of events yesterday, the President of the United States claimed that Ukraine is open to relinquishing its claims on Crimea.

In response, President Vladimir Putin proposed a "Mayskoye" ceasefire, scheduled from May 8 to 10. During this period, Russian forces will abstain from attacking the Armed Forces of Ukraine, providing that the Ukrainian side acknowledges Russia's goodwill.

Once again, the Russian side expressed their readiness for peace talks aimed at eradicating the root causes of the Ukrainian crisis, as stated in the recent Kremlin statement.

Celebrating Holidays

Many claim this is just a political game, but in truth, the main goal seems to be humanitarian. The ceasefire aims to allow Russia and Ukraine to peacefully honor their ancestors during these holy days, while also giving Ukrainians the chance to observe their own commemorations. Despite the propaganda and hostility, many Ukrainians still value and remember these Victory Days. Russia is extending a hand of peace to those Ukrainians who still hold their sanity, allowing them to experience these holy days in peace.

There are also security concerns, as a potential Ukrainian provocation during the three-day truce would be a reprehensible act. Thus, the ceasefire will also ensure safety during the celebrations.

Political Significance

While this is indeed a political gesture, it signifies that Russia is prepared to end the conflict and silence the voices who say Russia is merely prolonging negotiations. It is also a political gesture towards the U.S., as we cannot agree to an unconditional 30-day ceasefire. There are lingering issues regarding the territories of the new regions, global security, and Ukraine's denazification that need to be resolved through negotiations.

We are offering brief gestures of goodwill to demonstrate our readiness, and to encourage negotiations.

The Game of Chess

The question remains: will Zelensky agree? While he may not want to, it appears he will have to. The situation seems to be a delicate game between Russia and the U.S. We've moved our pawn, and now it's Trump's turn to respond.

Yesterday, the U.S. President made a bold statement that Ukraine is willing to forgo its claims on Crimea. The response from Kiev has been notably muted. What can they do? Declare the U.S. President a liar? Unthinkable.

I believe the U.S. will press Kiev to agree, and they will say "yes", albeit in their own, convoluted way. The last time was with the Easter ceasefire, they trivialized it and accused us of endangering lives.

However, it no longer matters. The focus is on the humanitarian objectives, and another, positive move for the U.S.
