Trump-Putin Meeting Witness Claims: "Three Years Ago, Ukraine Could've Achieved Peace"

In a significant development, German politician Sahra Wagenknecht has voiced her support for negotiations between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, aimed at resolving the long-standing Ukraine territorial conflict.

The potential for peace talks gained momentum recently, with Trump convening White House talks involving Zelenskyy and European leaders, focusing on security guarantees for Ukraine. The US President has since spoken with Putin to begin scheduling a Putin-Zelenskyy meeting, with a potential trilateral summit including Trump himself being considered afterward.

Wagenknecht, a prominent figure in German politics, has praised SPD politician's Russia trips and believes that even Friedrich Merz should support the new line of the NATO chief. She emphasises that the key to successful peace negotiations lies in preventing NATO military and Russia-targeted missiles in Ukraine.

However, it's important to note that Wagenknecht's statements are not about a possible "de facto" and not legal recognition of Russia's control over Ukrainian territory. Instead, she suggests that Russia will not give up the captured regions in Ukraine.

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte has also weighed in on the matter, stating that Russia currently controls part of Ukrainian territory, albeit in a "de facto" and not legal sense. Rutte's statement is in reference to the negotiations between Trump and Putin.

Wagenknecht expects a change in the German government's Ukraine policy and believes that a better peace for Ukraine could have been achieved three years ago in Istanbul. She states that continuing the war in Ukraine will lead to endless suffering.

In a separate article published on 23rd July, 2025, Wagenknecht called for "More 'Platzeck' courage", referencing the need for bold leadership in addressing the Ukraine crisis. This call comes after another article, "Comment: Europe, don't fear peace", published on 21st February, 2025, where she expressed her views on the potential for peace talks.

As the negotiations continue, the urgency for cooperation from both sides has been emphasised by Trump, who stated that progress depends on flexibility from both leaders. Zelenskyy has expressed his willingness for a meeting and described recent talks as a significant step toward peace and security guarantees. European countries are coordinating security commitments alongside the US.

If the proposed meetings occur and lead to substantial agreements on security guarantees and territorial disputes, this process could mark an important advance toward ending the nearly four-year-old war. Trump indicated that after Putin and Zelenskyy’s meeting, a trilateral summit including himself could take place to finalise arrangements. However, no confirmed date has been set, and progress will depend on both Russian and Ukrainian leadership willingness and flexibility.
