Trump-Putin Meeting in Alaska: Details on the Time, Location, and Agenda for Their Leadership Encounter
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will not be attending the meeting, and the talks did not result in a ceasefire or any deal to halt Russia’s war effort.
The much-anticipated summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin took place on August 15, 2025, at the US military’s Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska. The meeting aimed to discuss a common ground for a potential ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, marking the first face-to-face encounter between the two leaders since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022.
Trump came with the intent to initiate a ceasefire, but Putin remained intransigent and did not agree even on a temporary pause, with Russian forces continuing attacks in Ukraine during the meeting. Both presidents mentioned the possibility of a future meeting, possibly in Moscow, but no concrete commitments or agreements were made.
Analysts from the Atlantic Council noted that Putin’s approach appeared to be stalling, while Trump sought to stop the fighting and had invested considerable political capital in trying to broker peace. The summit concluded without progress on ending the conflict, reflecting the ongoing challenges in resolving the war in Ukraine through diplomatic channels at this time.
The meeting is the latest in Trump's attempts to halt war between Russia and Ukraine. Trump had earlier expressed hope for a "quick second meeting" involving Zelenskyy, but this did not materialize. Despite the uncertain outcome, the meeting is being closely watched by the whole world as "peace talks."
The meeting is taking place in Alaska, which is the closest point at which Russia and the United States are neighbours, located northwest of the US mainland. This is the first-ever visit of a Russian leader to Alaska. It remains unclear who will accompany Trump from the US side.
The meeting follows Trump’s warning to Russia of "very severe consequences" if it doesn’t stop hostilities in Ukraine post-Alaska meet. The Russian delegation includes Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Defence Minister Andrei Belousov, Finance Minister Anton Siluanov, Presidential Aide Yuri Ushakov, and Special Presidential Envoy on Foreign Investment and Economic Cooperation Kirill Dmitriev.
Despite Trump's poll promise to end war in Ukraine "within 24 hours of taking office," he has so far proved unsuccessful on personal levels. The meeting marks the first time in a decade that Putin will visit the US. Sky News also covered the event and highlighted the key moments, including a joint news conference following the talks.
