Trump proposes revoking broadcasting licenses for media outlets that criticize him
In a week marked by media tensions, President Trump made comments aboard Air Force One on Thursday, claiming a victory in the 2020 election, stating he won all seven swing states and the popular vote. This assertion, however, contradicts official election results.
Meanwhile, the comedy talk show "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" has been embroiled in controversy. The Nexstar Media Group, which owns 32 ABC-affiliated stations, temporarily suspended the broadcast of the show on their ABC-affiliated channels in mid-September 2025, following controversial comments by Jimmy Kimmel on September 10, 2025. The pre-emption of the show on ABC stations was a direct result of the actions taken by Nexstar and Sinclair, two local media companies that also announced they would not air "Jimmy Kimmel Live!".
The companies' statements called Kimmel's comments offensive, inappropriate, and insensitive. The catalyst for these events was a sarcastic remark Kimmel made about President Trump and grief, following the assassination of conservative influencer Charlie Kirk.
In response to the criticism, ABC indefinitely pulled "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" from its schedule. Earlier this week, Kimmel played a clip of Trump's response to a reporter's question about how he was holding up, which may have further fuelled the controversy.
The media tension doesn't end there. Federal Communications Commission chairman Brendan Carr threatened action against networks critical of Trump. Carr made his comments on The Benny Show, a podcast hosted by conservative commentator Benny Johnson. In a move that could be seen as a response to Carr's threat, Trump suggested that networks critical of him could have their broadcasting license revoked.
Amidst this media storm, Trump also announced the start of construction for a new White House ballroom. The construction of this new ballroom has reportedly been attempted for about 150 years. According to Trump's statement, the new ballroom is expected to be a beauty.
These events highlight the ongoing tensions between media and politics, with each side criticising the other for perceived biases and offensive comments. As the situation continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how these controversies will shape the future of media and politics.
