Trump Proposes Musk-Led Task Force to Cut Federal Spending, Raising Conflict Concerns
Former President Donald Trump has proposed a new task force to cut federal programs and crack down on improper payments. Tech billionaire Elon Musk, who has backed Trump's political campaigns, would lead this commission, raising potential conflict of interest concerns.
Trump's proposal echoes previous efforts by Presidents Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton, who also established similar task forces. Reagan's Grace Commission, led by businessman J. Peter Grace, made recommendations to reduce waste and inefficiency in federal agencies. Grace, also a founder of Citizens Against Government Waste, suggested nearly 2,500 recommendations that could save $424 billion over three years, although a later report found a more modest reduction of $98 billion.
Musk's companies, such as SpaceX and Tesla, have been slated to receive roughly $3 billion from contracts with 17 federal agencies in 2023. However, Musk's companies have been the subject of at least 20 federal investigations or reviews, sparking concerns about potential conflicts of interest if he were to lead the proposed commission. Grace, too, faced controversy due to his company's past actions and comments on the federal food stamp program.
Trump's proposed commission, if established, would aim to reduce waste and inefficiency in federal agencies. Musk's potential leadership has sparked debate, given his companies' significant federal contracts and ongoing investigations. The commission's recommendations, like those of the Grace Commission, could potentially impact private parties, including Musk's businesses.
