Trump Proposes 20-Point Plan to End Israel-Gaza Conflict
US President Donald Trump has proposed a 20-point plan to end the Israel-Gaza conflict. The plan includes an immediate ceasefire and the return of all hostages within 72 hours if Israel accepts. If Hamas rejects it, the plan will be implemented in areas already controlled by Israel. Notably, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu denies the plan includes a Palestinian state.
The plan, delivered to Hamas via Egypt and Qatar, is being studied by the group in a 'positive and objective' manner. It includes the release of 250 Palestinian prisoners serving life sentences and 1,700 Gazans detained since October 7, 2023, including all women and children. For each Israeli hostage whose remains are released, Israel will release the remains of 15 fallen Gazans. Point 19 mentions the possibility of 'Palestinian self-determination and the creation of a Palestinian state' under certain conditions.
Netanyahu insists that neither Hamas nor the Palestinian National Authority will be part of the civil administration governing Gaza post-massacre. Israel will assume responsibility for Gaza's security, including a 'security perimeter', and the accepted plan contemplates the total disarmament of Hamas and the destruction of its military infrastructure. To date, no state has officially registered as a guarantor to oversee Hamas and other factions’ compliance with their commitments in Gaza.
The Trump plan, if accepted, promises a significant de-escalation in the Israel-Gaza conflict. It includes prisoner releases, hostage returns, and potential self-determination for Palestinians. However, key issues such as Hamas' disarmament and Israel's security control remain contentious. The international community awaits Hamas' response to the proposal.
