Let's dish it out, shall we?

US Vice President JD Vance is about to set foot on Greenland, sparking Copenhagen and Nuuk's ire due to President Donald Trump's aggressive pursuit to annex the Danish territory.

Gossip Corner

National security adviser Mike Waltz and Energy Secretary Chris Wright are also in for the ride, according to Friday's reports.

Trump insists that Greenland is a vital piece of the national and international security puzzle, even stating bluntly, "We have to have it." However, Greenlandic officials, backed by the European Union, have retorted that such a move will never happen.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen denounced the uninvited US delegation's planned visit earlier this week as "unacceptable pressure" on Greenland and Denmark. Greenland's outgoing Prime Minister Mute B.Egede also slammed the visit as "external interference."

The Lowdown

The US visit originally encompassed a dog sled race in Sisimiut as well as the capital Nuuk. However, it was trimmed down to the US-run Pituffik Space Base in the northwest of the island following reports of planned demonstrations against the United States in Greenlandic towns and a rejection by the Nuuk Art Museum of a visit from Usha Vance.

Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen hopes Vance will get a "good briefing" on Greenland during his visit to Pituffik. He also noted the cancellation of the part of the visit that would have allowed contact between a delegation from the US administration and Greenlandic society. "It can only be seen as a sign that someone in the US has realized that the narrative about a Greenlandic population standing with open arms and desperate ambitions to become Americans is a false one," he said.

Vance, who is to meet with US Space Force members at Pituffik, plans to "check out what's going on with the security" of Greenland. His previous remarks in early 2023 irked Danes when he said Denmark was not doing its job protecting Greenland, prompting a sharp retort from Mette Frederiksen that Denmark has been a loyal US ally for many decades[1].

On the Horizon

A demonstration against the Trump administration's approach to Greenland has been organized in Copenhagen this weekend. Organizer Karen Littauer expresses sympathy for Greenland and has called the Trump administration's pursuit of the territory a "blatant violation." She believes that Denmark and Greenland will remain connected, even after Greenland's future independence[2].
