Trump praises PM Modi, affirms strong relationship during trade negotiations: "I have a close bond with Modi"

US President Donald Trump's visit to the United Kingdom has been marked by a series of significant events, including trade negotiations with India and diplomatic meetings with British officials.

During his stay, Trump met with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer at Chequers, the prime minister's country retreat. The visit also saw a ceremonial welcome for Trump and his wife, Queen Camilla and King Charles III, at Windsor Castle.

A state banquet and the signing of a major US-UK science and technology agreement were also part of Trump's itinerary.

Trump's visit to the UK also saw the resumption of US-India trade talks. The negotiations aim to reset ties following a recent escalation over tariffs and Russian energy purchases. The US imposed a 50% import tariff on Indian goods last month, doubling the previous 25% rate.

The trade discussions between the US and India are focused on addressing the issues of tariffs and Russian energy purchases. Indian officials have defended their energy strategy, stating that Russian oil purchases will continue as long as they remain financially viable.

Trump's pressure on India to halt its Russian oil imports is not isolated. He has also urged other allies, including G7 nations, to increase sanctions on India and China, the two largest buyers of Russian energy.

Peter Navarro, White House trade adviser, has stepped up pressure on India and China in recent weeks to stop their imports of Russian oil. Specifically, he put economic and tariff pressure on India to cease purchasing Russian oil, while China increased its purchases despite the pressure.

The criticism of India and China's Russian oil purchases aims to pressure Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war in Ukraine.

Trump reaffirmed his close relationship with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a press conference, stating that the two leaders share a common vision for a free and open Indo-Pacific region.

Both the US and India described the trade discussions as positive. The ongoing negotiations are a testament to the strong relations between the two countries and their shared commitment to fostering economic growth and security.
