German Chancellor Friedrich Merz's Take on Trading with the US and Russia's War

Trump ponders tough economic penalties against Russia, as the German leader advocates for intensified restraint on Putin

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz recently visited the White House, discussing trade negotiations with the US while discussing the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.

During his meeting with President Donald Trump, Merz strongly emphasized that the Kremlin needs to end its violent three-year war against Ukraine as the conflict shows no signs of slowing down despite multiple peace attempts.

Merz stated, "Strength brings peace, and weakness invites aggression." Highlighting Russia's ability to halt the war immediately, he urged Trump to increase pressure on Putin's government to make this ceasefire happen.

Trump has been hesitant to enforce additional secondary sanctions against Moscow, continuing efforts to bring a conclusion to Russia's war. Congress, however, is pushing for stricter economic penalties against Russia and its supporters in a bid to make Moscow participate in constructive peace negotiations.

Senators Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) are spearheading a bipartisan sanctions bill, aiming to impose severe consequences for Russia and countries buying Russian products. The proposed bill might force Russia onto a "trade island," isolating it, and introducing harsh tariffs on participating countries. Blumenthal states that China's economic support for Russia must come to an end for Putin's war machine to cease functioning.

Trump expressed reluctance about the proposed sanctions bill, mentioning it might be too harsh and awaiting his decision on the matter. He claimed, "I'm a quick learner. I'll know what to do soon, but I haven't made up my mind yet."

When questioned about the complexity in bringing the Russians to the negotiating table, Merz admitted it's been a challenge, yet requested increased pressure on Russia from the US. "That's exactly why I asked the President to act against Russia," Merz stated. "And the same goes for the Senate sanctions bill, which I believe will lead to an end to this terrible war."
