Trump plans to urge Putin to halt the ongoing conflict, as per the reported decision.
In the ongoing efforts to bring an end to the Ukraine war, Donald Trump, Volodymyr Zelensky, and European leaders are collaborating to find a swift and peaceful resolution.
Donald Trump, the former US President, is advocating for a peace deal that involves Ukraine accepting a land swap with Russia. He has been actively pushing for meetings between Zelenskyy and Putin, including proposing trilateral talks, and recently hosted Zelenskyy along with seven European leaders at the White House to discuss these peace solutions.
However, Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian President, appears cautious. Despite participating in these meetings, he has been diplomatically skeptical of deals heavily favoring Russian territorial demands, reflecting Ukraine’s interest in preserving sovereignty.
European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, are collaborating with Trump and Zelenskyy in seeking a diplomatic resolution. They emphasize the need for strong sanctions on Russia and continued military support for Ukraine to maintain pressure on Moscow and safeguard Ukraine’s security.
A virtual meeting with France, the UK, Italy, Poland, Finland, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, and Zelensky is planned. Additionally, a virtual meeting of a "coalition of the willing" led by Germany, France, and the UK is scheduled for later.
Recently, Zelensky reported a long conversation with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi about sanctions against Russian oil. Modi expressed his readiness to speak with Zelensky and hear his perspective on recent developments. Zelensky thanked Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for his "readiness to work for peace."
As the deadline for Trump's ultimatum to Putin approaches, there seems to be a real chance for peace. Zelensky sees this as an opportunity and expressed his optimism. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz will consult with Trump, Zelensky, European leaders, and others on the Ukraine war before Wednesday's meeting.
India, too, has shown its support for Ukraine's peace efforts. Modi stated that everything concerning Ukraine must be decided with Ukraine's involvement. This stance aligns with Zelensky's position that Ukraine's sovereignty should be preserved in any peace deal.
As the diplomatic landscape continues to evolve, the joint efforts of these world leaders offer a glimmer of hope for a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine war. However, the complexities and challenges remain, with Russian resistance and divergent priorities among the leaders presenting significant hurdles.
