In response to prolonged protests in the heart of California against the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), President Trump has taken exceptional measures. He ordered the deployment of roughly 2,000 National Guard soldiers, as revealed by his spokesperson, Karoline Leavitt [1].

This escalation is not welcomed by many, given it's a rare move in American history for a President to seize control of a state's National Guard. As a military reserve unit and part of the U.S. armed forces, the National Guard is usually governed by the states [2]. However, under extreme circumstances such as war or national emergencies, a President can take command. In total, the U.S. numbers nearly 325,000 National Guard members [2].

Previous Warnings Ignored

Governor Gavin Newsom had previously cautioned about the potential escalation, expressing concerns to which local authorities responded negatively. U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, however, hinted at the deployment of U.S. Marines to back up law enforcement against demonstrators [3]. Hegseth later reported immediate mobilization of the National Guard to support federal law enforcement in Los Angeles and the readiness of Marines at Camp Pendleton, should the need arise [3].

Intensifying Protest

Citizens in Los Angeles have protests for two consecutive days, rallying against ICE raids that ensnared 44 individuals on Friday over alleged immigration violations. The predominantly Latino suburb of Paramount, southeastern Los Angeles, saw demonstrators clashing aggressively against uniformed police officers wearing gas masks, amidst overturned shopping carts and waving Mexican flags [4].

Ron Gochez, a protester, firmly asserted, "Now they know they can't go anywhere in this country where our people are and try to abduct our workers, our people - they can't do that without organized and fierce resistance." Meanwhile, Stephen Miller, a prominent White House immigration hardliner, labelled the protests as "an insurrection against the laws and sovereignty of the United States" and "violent insurrection" [4].

Mayoral Condemnation

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass condemned the immigration raids unequivocally, regarding the tactics as spreading fear and disrupting city security principles. The authorities responsible, including the ICE, Department of Homeland Security, and LAPD, were silent on the issue [4].

Trump has repeatedly pledged to detain a record number of illegal immigrants in the U.S. and reinforce the border with Mexico. The White House set a target of rounding up at least 3,000 migrants daily [4].
