Trump Once More Opposes Social Housing in Upscale Neighborhood, Sparks Controversy with Newsom

In a recent development, California Governor Gavin Newsom has responded to US President Donald Trump's accusations regarding housing policy on the outskirts of Los Angeles. Newsom labeled Trump's claims as "a flat-out lie."

The ongoing dispute between the two leaders is not limited to the housing policy on the outskirts of the city. It encompasses a broader range of issues, stemming from their previous disagreements on housing policy matters.

The controversy arises from fears of overcrowding due to a law from 2021 that allows owners to divide plots of land and single-family houses into multiple housing units. This measure is part of the government's plan to combat homelessness. However, Trump has accused California's government, specifically Governor Newsom, of giving preferential treatment to social housing in the allocation of building permits.

The planned construction of social housing has caused controversy, with Trump arguing it is unfair to the people who have suffered from the fires in the Palisades. Approximately 4,700 single-family houses were destroyed or severely damaged by the fires, with an estimated damage to real estate of around $30 billion.

The social housing is set to be built in an area where Thomas Mann once lived and where Stephen Spielberg now resides. The rebuilding of the Palisades area, which was destroyed by fires, has already caused controversy in July.

Notably, the US President has expressed his displeasure about the situation on his social media platform, Truth Social. On the other hand, Newsom responded to Trump's accusations on the news platform X.

Mayor of Los Angeles, Karen Bass, is also involved in the dispute over housing policy on the outskirts of the city. The disagreements between Trump and Newsom extend back to the fires around Los Angeles and the deployment of the National Guard.

The situation between the US President and the Democratic governor of California, who is publicly feuding with Trump and is considered a strong candidate for the Democratic Party in the 2028 presidential election, continues to unfold. Human rights organizations have repeatedly criticized the authorities in California for their criminal measures against homeless people and called for more affordable housing. Whether Trump's concerns are genuinely about the exclusivity of the luxury district between Malibu and Santa Monica or the ongoing dispute with Newsom is unclear.
