In a surprising turn of events, Donald Trump, the former U.S. President, has given his strongest endorsement yet to Vice President J.D. Vance as a potential successor in the Republican Party. This endorsement marks a significant shift in Trump's stance towards Vance, who he had previously declined to endorse six months ago when asked by Fox News.
During a meeting with reporters on Tuesday, Trump declared, "I think most likely, in all fairness, he's the vice president." This endorsement comes at a time when Vance, a prominent figure in shaping the future of the Republican Party under Trump's influence, is seen as a key MAGA ally.
Vance, an author, venture capitalist, and politician, rose to national prominence with his 2016 memoir Hillbilly Elegy. He served as a U.S. Senator from Ohio from January 2023 until January 2025 and was chosen by Trump as his running mate in the 2024 presidential election, narrowly defeating the Democratic ticket.
The endorsement by Trump is not without its historical precedent. Vance is the first Millennial vice president, one of the youngest, the first Marine Corps veteran, and has been described as the "second-most powerful vice president in U.S. history."
Interestingly, Trump's endorsement also hints at potential teamwork between Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Despite their rivalry during the 2016 Republican primary, Rubio served as a close adviser to Trump on foreign relations. During the 2016 campaign, Trump disparaged Rubio as "Little Marco," while Rubio made a comment about Trump's hand size, suggesting he has a small penis. Despite these past tensions, it appears that any lingering animosity has been set aside in favour of a potential political alliance.
