Snippet: Unpredictable Trump Show

Previous visitors have found themselves witnessing an unpredictable performance by the hot-headed Trump. Ukrainian President Selenskyj walked out during a ruckus, swapping diplomatic chit-chat for a hasty exit.

Another candidate, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, was publicly grilled and accused in front of the cameras. While Selenskyj beat a quick retreat, Ramaphosa attempted to charm his way through the discourse.

Meeting on the Same Level?

Now, Merz is set to face off against Trump. Plans include a joint lunch and a press conference at the White House. Having entered office around the same time, the first meeting carries significant weight. This could lay the foundations for almost four years of collaboration. And there's plenty to discuss—trade disputes, NATO defense, Ukrainian policy, and more.

Height-wise, both men can claim an equal status, with Trump standing at 1.90 meters and Merz, at about 1.98 meters. Since Merz took office, the two have developed a first-name basis, spoken on the phone several times, and exchanged messages. They go by their given names, Friedrich and Donald. Merz plans on presenting Trump with a secret gift as well as a pledge to increase Germany's military spending.

Clashing Heads? Especially When Emotions Run High!

According to negotiation expert Matthias Schranner, the guy who's all about tough situations, Merz should steer clear of any provocative moves from the Trumpster. When Trump tries to poke and prod, Merz should keep his cool, return to shared interests, and never lose sight of commonalities.

Schranner also pointed out that Merz's relationship with American company BlackRock could work to his advantage. "He knows how to handle difficult partners," said Schranner.

A Firm and Business-like Stance

According to Jürgen Hardt, CDU/CSU Bundestag faction's foreign policy spokesman, Merz should take a no-nonsense approach, even with tricky topics like relations with China. "Merz can pull it off," asserts Hardt.

In a previous interview, Merz hinted at the strategies he'll employ with Trump. He emphasized that he wouldn't approach the conversation as a supplicant. Merz expressed confidence in representing European positions, and he warned that there would be a lot of background noise to contend with.
