The Alaska Summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin concluded without a final agreement, aiming instead to establish a framework for a ceasefire in Ukraine and address territorial integrity issues.

In a bid to broker a peace deal, the summit was a high-stakes attempt primarily focused on negotiations between the US and Russia, with Ukraine notably absent from the talks. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy did not participate, raising concerns about the summit’s ability to reach a lasting peace.

Before the summit, the most favorable prospective outcome discussed included a ceasefire with minor land swaps, recognition that Russia would not officially annex 20% of Ukraine, acknowledgment of Ukraine’s sovereignty over the rest of its territory, and limitations on NATO’s military presence in Ukraine.

However, the talks were complicated by differing maximalist aims from Russia, including regime change and demilitarization demands rejected by Ukraine and its allies. These demands were a significant obstacle to reaching a consensus during the summit.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) demanded that fundamental European and Ukrainian security interests be preserved at the Alaska meeting. French President Emmanuel Macron advocated for a trilateral meeting between Trump, Putin, and Zelensky in Europe, in a neutral country accepted by all sides.

Zelenskyy emphasized Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, stating that any questions concerning the territorial integrity of Ukraine cannot be discussed without taking into account the will of the state, people, and the constitution of Ukraine. He also made it clear that a legal recognition of Russian occupations is not up for debate.

Ukraine is ready for negotiations on territorial questions, but the contact line (front line) must be the starting point. Any agreement must be based on respect for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

If there is no progress in Alaska, both the Europeans and Zelensky fear Trump and Putin could agree on territorial concessions from Ukraine to Russia. In this case, Merz stated that the USA and the Europeans must increase the pressure on Russia to ensure that the interests of Ukraine and the EU are protected.

In conclusion, while the Alaska Summit aimed to set a framework for a ceasefire in Ukraine, the exclusion of Ukraine and the EU from direct talks has raised doubts about the summit’s ability to reach a lasting peace deal. The future of Ukraine’s territorial integrity remains uncertain, and the international community must continue to monitor the situation closely.
