Trump issues warning to Putin, threatening severe repercussions if Russia continues its military campaign
In a recent virtual conference, President Donald Trump, along with European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, discussed the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. During the meeting, Trump expressed a desire for a ceasefire and threatened severe consequences against Russia if peace efforts were not made within two weeks.
Trump stated that he is prepared to impose massive sanctions or tariffs on Russia if there is no progress toward a peaceful settlement in the Ukraine war. This comes after a Russian strike hit an American-owned factory in Ukraine, causing frustration for the President.
In addition to these threats, Trump targeted India’s importation and resale of Russian oil by announcing a 25% tariff aimed at deterring countries from supporting Russia’s economy through oil purchases. This move is a response to Russia’s aggression and is intended to pressure Russia into ending the conflict to save lives.
Zelenskyy, on the other hand, stated that Putin wants the occupation of Ukraine, not peace. He advised Trump and other officials that Putin is "bluffing" in pursuing peace, and is pushing for a three-way meeting between Russia, Ukraine, and the United States.
French President Emmanuel Macron stated that Trump expressed a desire for a ceasefire during the meeting in Alaska. He also reported that Trump conveyed that territorial matters from Ukraine can only be negotiated by the Ukrainian president.
European governments, including France and Britain, have expressed their support for Ukraine in any potential peace negotiations. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that real progress was made in the virtual meeting and that the coalition is ready to support the meeting between Trump and Putin.
Meanwhile, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs deputy spokesperson Alexei Fadeev considered the consultations requested by the Europeans as politically and practically insignificant.
Overnight, long-range strikes by Russia and Ukraine continued, with Ukraine's air force reporting the shooting down or suppression of 32 drones and both North Korean-made ballistic missiles, while Russia's Defense Ministry reported the shooting down of 63 Ukrainian drones.
Trump is scheduled to meet with Putin at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, and he has expressed a desire for a second meeting with Putin, but suggested it may not take place if he does not get the answers he needs.
