Trump is struggling among independents regarding the economy and inflation, according to a recent survey

In a recent poll conducted between July 25-28 among 1,777 respondents, it was found that President Donald Trump's approval ratings among independents are low, a critical voting group for the 2024 election.

The poll, which had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.4 percentage points for the entire sample and plus or minus 3 percentage points for registered voters, did not provide information on Vice President Kamala Harris' approval ratings among independent voters or the general public.

However, it did reveal that Trump's net approval rating on inflation among independent voters is -45 points, which is worse than Joe Biden's was a year ago. In comparison, 29% of independent voters approve of Trump's job performance, while 62% disapprove and 9% are unsure.

Independents are considered a key voting group in presidential elections, as they played a significant role in the 2020 election, with then-Democratic candidate Joe Biden carrying the group by 9 percentage points.

The poll also showed that Trump's handling of the economy, inflation, and immigration is largely disapproved of by independent voters, with 29%, 24%, and 37% approval ratings respectively.

The poll found that respondents were divided along party lines, with only 6% of Democrats approving of Trump's job performance, compared to 86% of Republicans. Among registered voters, 44% approve of Trump's job performance, while 53% disapprove.

In the 2024 election, independent voters are evenly split between Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris, according to Pew Research. This indicates that the independent vote could be crucial in determining the outcome of the next presidential election.

CNN's Harry Enten stated that inflation, which was a major factor that brought Biden's approval ratings down, is now more so for Trump. Enten never thought he'd see the day where the issue that helped get Trump elected is now the one that is dragging him down the most.

The poll did not provide information on how Harris' approval ratings on inflation compare to Biden's a year ago or how they compare to Trump's among independent voters.

As the 2024 election approaches, it will be interesting to see how these approval ratings evolve and how they may impact the race for the White House.
