Trump intends to label Antifa as a significant terrorist entity
In a recent social media post, President Donald Trump announced his intention to recommend investigating those who fund antifa groups, following the fatal shooting of political activist Charlie Kirk.
Antifa, an umbrella term for far-left-leaning militant groups opposing fascists and neo-Nazis, does not have a publicly known centralized structure or leadership. The U.S., however, does not maintain a public list of domestic terrorist groups.
The shooting suspect, Tyler Robinson, stated that he killed Kirk because he 'spreads too much hate.' It is not immediately clear whether Robinson was influenced by or affiliated with antifa.
Deputy Chief of Staff Steven Miller stated that these organizations, including antifa, organize attacks on ICE officers, Border Patrol agents, and doxing campaigns, which are a violation of federal law. Miller added that the attorney general will find out who is paying for the violence.
Trump suggested that Robinson was radicalized online. He also stated that someone is paying for the violence, and they will not be criminally liable for paying for it.
The Congressional Research Service report states that there exists a grey area between combating potential violence associated with domestic terrorism and publicly identifying those with extreme beliefs. It is not clear how such a designation for antifa would be made or how federal law enforcement might make use of it.
The State Department does maintain a list of Designated Foreign Terrorist Organizations. Trump stated that he would also recommend investigating those who fund antifa groups, without specifying individuals.
Trump's comments on antifa come in the wake of the fatal shooting of political activist Charlie Kirk. The White House is targeting nongovernmental organizations that are allegedly fomenting violence.
The key point made by the president is that someone is paying for the violence, and they will not be criminally liable for paying for it. The implications of this proposal are yet to be seen, as the process of designating antifa as a 'major terrorist organization' would require further action and discussion.
