In a recent phone call, US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin delved into the war brewing between Israel and Iran. Putin took a swipe at Israeli attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities and military targets, while proposing to mediate the conflict.

"Big bang" in Tel AvivTrump, turning 79 on the day of the call, also joined the conversation. Putin extended warm birthday wishes to his American counterpart on his Truth Social platform. The conversation ran for about an hour.

"He gets it just like me; this Israel-Iran conflict needs to end. So, I told him that his Moscow invasion must also come to an end," Trump penned.

However, discussions surrounding the Ukraine war took a back seat compared to the Middle East's hotspot. Putin suggested Russia's readiness to carry on negotiations with the Ukrainian side post-June 22.

Russia and Ukraine have been at odds for over three years now.

To lobby harderThe day before, Putin had a chit-chat with Iranian President Massoud Peseschkian and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as well. This was the fifth phone call between the two leaders during 2025.

The upcoming Israeli strike on an Iranian weapons cache in Muscat was a potential roadblock to Iran’s willingness to rejoin nuclear talks. Still, both the US and Russia remain optimistic about returning to negotiations once Iran shows readiness to engage. Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff is ready to engage with Iran's foreign minister on the matter, should Iran agree to talks.
