Trump in the U.K. Expresses Opposition to Starmer's Views on Palestinian Statehood

US President Donald Trump and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer held a joint press conference on Thursday, where they discussed a range of issues, including the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine and the current hostage crisis in Gaza.

Trump expressed a desire for an immediate release of the hostages, stating that there was no humanity or warmth shown to them. He criticized Hamas for threatening to use hostages as shields against an Israeli attack and boasted about his role in releasing hostages in the past. Trump was shocked to hear that the hostages reported no warmth or humanity, and he expressed a strong desire for their prompt release.

Starmer noted that hostages have been held for a long time and that assistance is needed to enter Gaza quickly to secure their release. He stated that the leaders discussed the need for peace and a roadmap, and that the situation in Gaza is intolerable. Starmer also stated that the question of recognition is part of an overall peace plan.

Trump stated that the conflict between Israel and Palestine has been ongoing for decades, and he indicated a disagreement with Starmer on the issue of recognizing a Palestinian state. He clearly opposed the recognition of a Palestinian state by other countries, arguing that such recognition would not solve the underlying problems, especially since the Palestinian territories are divided between Hamas and the Palestinian Authority and do not recognize Israel. His administration even tried to dissuade Australia from recognizing Palestine before the UN General Assembly.

Trump met with many hostages who recounted their experiences, and he referenced October 7th as one of the worst violent days in the history of the world. The question of the UK's plans to recognize a Palestinian state was raised during the conference, but Starmer did not provide a clear answer.

Both leaders expressed a commitment to finding a peaceful solution to the conflict and securing the release of the hostages. The press conference ended with a call for diplomacy and a renewed focus on finding a lasting peace in the Middle East.
