Trump Hopeful for Unrestricted Pause in Foreign Conflicts, According to French Foreign Minister
The August 2025 talks between former U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska ended without an agreement on an unconditional ceasefire in the Ukraine war.
According to a UN report, the highest number of injured and killed civilians in Ukraine since May 2022 was recorded in July, with 286 deaths and 1388 injuries. The majority of these casualties were due to Russian drone and missile strikes, with 24% attributed to drone strikes near the frontline and almost 40% in the Ukrainian hinterland, including major cities like Kyiv, Dnipro, and Kharkiv.
Trump went into the talks with the demand for an unconditional ceasefire in Ukraine, but the meeting yielded no breakthrough. Putin, despite shedding parts of his international isolation and avoiding new U.S. sanctions, avoided any commitment to an immediate ceasefire or peace process. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov explicitly rejected direct talks between Putin and Ukrainian President Zelenskyy and insisted Russia must have veto power over Ukraine’s security arrangements.
On the Ukrainian side, Zelenskyy gained a tentative commitment from Trump on participating in security guarantees for Ukraine and improved his political relationship with Trump compared to earlier in 2025. However, these diplomatic gestures did not translate into a formal ceasefire or peace agreement.
Notably, shortly after the talks, Russia intensified military actions, launching a major bombardment including a missile strike on a U.S.-owned facility in western Ukraine.
The support package for Ukraine, financed by Germany, has a total value of up to 500 million US dollars and includes weapons and ammunition. Keir Starmer, the British Prime Minister, has reaffirmed unwavering support for Ukraine, while Donald Tusk, Poland's Prime Minister, emphasized the importance of a united front against Russia, as well as with allies like the US.
While both Tusk and his political rival, President Karol Nawrocki, are strong supporters of Ukraine, Nawrocki shows greater alignment with Trump's views. Trump has confirmed that the planned deliveries would also include Patriot air defense systems.
Despite the lack of a ceasefire, the number of casualties from drone strikes near the frontline decreased by 20% compared to June. However, compared to the same period last year, the number of casualties increased by 22.5%.
The ongoing conflict highlights the need for continued international involvement in the region, with discussions focused on security rather than concrete peace agreements at this stage.
