Trump honored in Britain
In a grand spectacle of diplomacy and controversy, US President Donald Trump's state visit to Britain unfolded on the expansive grounds of Windsor Castle and at the Prime Minister's country estate, Chequers. The British government and royal family rolled out the red carpet for Trump with unprecedented fanfare.
During his stay, Trump expressed praise for Chequers, calling it "quite a place." He also commended the unbreakable relationship between Britain and the USA, expressing his appreciation during a press conference with Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Trump praised Starmer for his stance against the terrorist organization Hamas, and acknowledged their shared views on the importance of supporting Ukraine.
However, the visit was not without its share of controversies. The US broadcaster ABC canceled the late-night show of comedian Jimmy Kimmel, with reports suggesting pressure from Trump's MAGA movement played a role. Trump dismissed questions about Kimmel's firing by claiming it was due to poor ratings.
The topic of Jeffrey Epstein's scandal has been sticking to Trump for weeks, and it seemed to cast a shadow over his visit. When asked about ending the Gaza war, Trump emphasized the release of all hostages without addressing the question directly.
Trade deals and economic agreements were also on the agenda. Peter Mandelson, in his role as British Ambassador to the USA, helped prepare the visit and arranged these agreements. Despite Trump's dismissal of a critical question about Mandelson, despite photos of them together in the Oval Office just a few months ago, the trade deal and state visit planning were significant.
Trump's stance on Russia was also a point of interest. He made further Russia sanctions contingent on all NATO countries imposing high tariffs on Chinese imports and stopping Russian oil purchases. Trump accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of "killing many people," but there has been no additional pressure on Putin. If the oil price drops, Putin will have no choice but to end the war, according to Trump.
Trump's views on renewable energy were also evident. He dismissed wind power as an "expensive joke." In contrast, he advised Starmer to apply his "Drill, baby, drill" motto to the North Sea and increase oil production.
King Charles III made a clear appeal for Trump to support Ukraine in his speech at the state banquet, recalling their joint struggle for freedom in the two world wars. Trump's response to this appeal remains unclear.
As the state visit drew to a close, the focus shifted to the imminent recognition of a Palestinian state. Trump described this as "one of the few points of disagreement" with Starmer. The visit, marked by a mix of praise, controversy, and disagreement, serves as a testament to the complex and evolving relationship between Britain and the USA under Trump's presidency.
