Trump has been under Putin's manipulation for several months.
The highly anticipated meeting between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, scheduled for August 15, 2025, ended without any agreement on a ceasefire or peace initiative for the ongoing Ukraine conflict.
Rüdiger von Fritsch, the former German ambassador to Moscow, had voiced concerns about Trump's approach to the conflict, expressing doubt that he could extract concessions from Putin. Fritsch believed that Putin had been "leading Trump by the nose" since the beginning of Trump's presidency, with Trump doing little to counter Putin's actions and ongoing aggression in Ukraine.
The Russian Foreign Ministry had previously stated that the same conditions applied to the Alaska summit as those formulated by Putin in June 2024, which included the complete submission of Ukraine, large territorial concessions, and the demilitarization of the country. However, these conditions were not met, and the meeting ended without any agreement.
During the meeting, both leaders raised the possibility of future talks but made no firm commitments. The expected outcome of the meeting, according to Fritsch, was no deal on a ceasefire or peace agreement.
The Ukraine conflict has been a subject of much speculation, with experts and analysts widely agreeing that the meeting produced no tangible progress toward ending the war. Putin continued to attack Ukraine with air strikes even in the days leading up to the summit, and his goal remains to subjugate Ukraine.
Europe's diplomatic approach was described as "resolute and skillful" by Rüdiger von Fritsch, with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stressing the importance of maintaining European and Ukrainian security interests. Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the Ukrainian president, personally attended a video conference of European heads of state and government, which Trump also participated in.
Despite the lack of progress, Merz expressed hope for progress and peace in Ukraine, with Trump sharing this position "to a large extent." However, Fritsch does not expect any concessions from Putin regarding Ukraine in Alaska. In fact, Putin may try to show Trump "wonderful future prospects in a joint economic cooperation" without making any concessions regarding Ukraine.
As the outlook for resolving the Ukraine conflict remains uncertain, the focus now shifts to future talks and the potential for a ceasefire or peace agreement.
