Trump Forms Commission to Cut Bureaucracy, Musk and Ramaswamy to Lead
President Trump is forming a new entity, the Department of Government Efficiency, led by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy. The aim is to advise on government efficiency and propose cuts to bureaucracy, regulations, and expenditures. The commission, not a federal department, will operate outside the government. Musk has previously floated this idea and holds significant federal contracts. Ramaswamy, during his presidential campaign, proposed large-scale layoffs to reduce the federal workforce by 75%. Trump's new commission aims to complete its work by July 4, 2026, coinciding with the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. One of Trump's specific proposals to cut federal spending is to eliminate the Education Department. However, this initiative marks a departure from Trump's first term, during which he oversaw a small growth in the federal workforce and most of his agency restructuring proposals were abandoned. The commission, led by Musk and Ramaswamy, will work closely with the White House's Office of Management and Budget to propose cuts. Public Citizen, a consumer advocacy group, has condemned the plan to slash regulations and Musk's selection for the role. The commission's work is expected to conclude by 2026.
